Thursday, April 30, 2015 {Latin}

1. I got up around 6:45 and got ready for the day.

2. I spent most of the earlier part of the morning focused on making a plan for Latin. Around 10, Lisa called to say I. wouldn't be at Latin. I made a few more quick calls to make sure that H. would be there, and that Gloria was fine with us using her house as a classroom.

3. After finishing up the Latin prep, I read and notated an essay of a classmate from my English class which I am doing a peer review of. I ate some watermelon while doing this. Also did some history stuff.

4. I walked to Gloria's for Latin. With one student missing, it was a bit of a different experience, but I think it went well, and we covered everything I wanted to in the time allotted.

5. I got a ride home from Connie, and then ate lentil soup while working on my peer review letter.

6. My dad came to take us to his house. Once there, I finished the peer review letter and submitted it online, then switched to Geology. I researched volcanoes for a while for an essay I have to write, but burned out pretty quickly. I finished a post lab worksheet, then did a bit of work on a lab on plate tectonics, and read a bit about metamorphic rocks in my textbook. I am a bit behind on reading, but should be able to catch up pretty easily this weekend.

7. I did unimportant internet things for a while, like checking DeviantArt which I really need to do more often, and briefly discussing the new CGP Grey video and the new Hello Internet episode with H.

8. As burned out and tired as I was, I persevered and worked on math prep for the SAT a bit. Not sure how useful it was since I was having a really hard time paying attention, but since the test is on Saturday, it seems like a good idea to at least try to be prepared.

9. Isabelle and I ate dinner with Dad, Beth, and Aidan (my stepmom and stepbrother), then went to Menchies.

10. Came home and read the peer review letter that my classmate wrote for me. I think he had some good suggestions, and I will definitely take what he said into account as I go about revising this essay.

11. Cleaned the house a bit for current affairs tomorrow. I thought about trying to do some more school stuff, but my mental exhaustion won out and nothing productive was done.

12. Watched Doctor Who, puttered around a little on the internet, read Jane Eyre and went to bed.

Tuesday, April 28, 2015 {Pirouettes}

Today would be a little boring to go through in strict chronological order, so instead, here are the things I did today, grouped so that they make more sense.

1. I spent the majority of the day working on an essay, the rough draft of which is due tomorrow. I knew what I was writing about, and I had lots of pieces written (about 2000 words actually), but it was in little chunks I needed to find a way to piece together. I decided to go the index card and color coded note route, which is always fun and worked pretty well, though I feel like it could still be more cohesive.

2. I worked on a world map for Geology for a while. Each tectonic plate had to be colored a different color on a double page spread world map handout. That was actually super fun. Next step is to label a bunch of fault lines and active volcanoes on it.

3. For history, I mostly did map work. Those maps were a little frustrating, and I ended up changing the directions because A) I didn't like them, and B) they weren't doable with the information I had. Granted, Google exists, but I didn't have the time or patience to bother looking the stuff up. Maps are fun, though, and I love doing them for history. Getting to do one for Geology too is awesome. I also did some reading for history.

4. Those things took up the majority of my day, but I also did a bit of SAT math prep, and listened to the new Hello Internet episode while I worked on map stuff.

5. Those things were basically my entire day from 8 to 5. After that, we had dinner, and I left for ballet.

6. Ballet class was good. I've been getting a little frustrated with my turns lately, and today I had the same problems. Today in pirouettes and piques, I could easily do a single, but consistently fell out of it 1.5 times around, never being able to hit a double with out falling out of the turn.

7. After dance I came home and tried to make the Works Cited page for my essay, before realizing I didn't have all the information I needed to do that, and so turned in my draft online.

8. Did random stuff on the internet for a little bit, instead of working on more Geology homework like I probably should have. I was too burned out from doing work all day. No more!

9. Wrote this post, read Jane Eyre, went to bed.

Monday, April 27, 2015 {Predictable}

1. I got up a little late this morning, but managed to be ready to leave on time for school. I took the bus, and got to school around 7:45.

2. The Geology teacher was a few minutes late, and there was a gathering of the students outside the classroom waiting for it to be unlocked, and debating what to do if he didn't show up. He did, though, and class went on as normal. I turned in the homework assignment that was due, though I'm a little nervous about how well I did the last half of it.

3. After class, C and I went back to the place we always hang out for the next hour and a half. Seriously, we are way too predictable. If you want to find either of us on a MWF morning, go to that one bench. We talked about random stuff for the break, with some expeditions by C in search of fries, which he eventually found and purchased, and which I ate most of.

4. English. We spent most of the class writing an essay, a rough draft of which is due on Wednesday.

5. After that class, I met up with C for a few more minutes during which he listed the terrifying number of things he has to do in the next 13 months. The more I listened to him, the more I realized my future is depressingly similar, though perhaps not quite as bad. Then I ate lunch and worked a little on my essay.

6. I went to volunteer at the library, cleaning books. I debated going to the teen club thingy at the library, but chickened out, and went to Chocolate Necessities w/ Julie and her boys. Flavors of the week: chocolate, pink grapefruit, and watermelon. N and I hung out for an hour while I worked on my essay and talked about homeschooling and my birthday, and other stuff.

7. Irish dance class. Fun class, lots of review.

8. Came home, ate dinner (asparagus pesto pasta), watched the Season 5 finale of Doctor Who, wrote this log, read Jane Eyre, went to bed.

A Note to All Readers

Hi all!

I started this up about a week ago, with the goal of recording and sharing this part of my life. My hope was that it would provide my family and friends with a method of keeping up with what I'm doing, and also to be something I'll be able to look back on in the future and remember what I was doing in 11th grade and beyond.

What I did not anticipate was that people would actually be reading it in the numbers that you are. I'm expecting that that number will go down a bit over time, but I thought that it might be a good idea to write a bit of an introductory post.

I do expect that if you are reading this blog consistently, you probably know me in real life. If you don't, I imagine that you will find this blog hard to follow in the long run. My goal here is not to be a storyteller, but simply a recorder.

This is particularly important considering that when I am talking about my day to day life, I'm going to be inevitably talking about other people. This puts me in a hard spot sometimes, because I want to make sure not to overstep any boundaries, or talk about anybody in a way that they don't wish to be spoken about, particularly if they don't even know that this blog exists, or that I'm talking about them on it.

As a result, you will see that many people will be referred to with a simple letter. This letter is an initial that is easy for me to remember and use, and, if you know me and my friends and family, it probably won't be hard to tell who I'm talking about. I'm considering using other methods of identification for adults in my life, but we'll see. For teachers, or other people who are in some public role, I'll use their full name if it makes sense to do so.

If you are someone whose name is (or isn't) being used on here, and you would like to let me know that you aren't comfortable with your name being on here, or that you don't mind me using your real name, please go ahead and leave me a comment on any post.

I won't post every day. I'm hoping for 4ish days most weeks, maybe more or less on some weeks. I won't post on days where I don't have time, just don't feel like it, or if I have something going on that I don't want to talk about.

On that note, this is not a full record of everything I am doing all the time. If you know me in real life, and read about what I did on Thursday, be aware that I may have left out details or entire events if I felt like it was a good idea. There could be a multitude of reasons for doing that, but don't assume that because I didn't write about something, it didn't happen.

Thank you so much for choosing to keep up with me this way! If you really want to stay up to date on my life, put your email address in the box in the top right hand corner of the page. If you do that, you'll get an email every time I post to this blog.

Thanks for reading! And please feel free to comment! I'd love to know who is reading, and what you think.

Sunday, April 26, 2015 {Insurgent}

1. Today I slept in until close to 8am, which was awesome. I got up and got ready for the day.

2. I babysat for a couple of hours. I spent most of the time watching the family's chicks as they became accustomed to their outdoor coop. The kids and I took them out for an hour or so to enjoy the nice weather before bringing them back in. The rest of the time was just messing around inside while the kids ate lunch, and the 6yo showed off her reading skills.

3. I came home and worked on my Geology homework for a little while, reading about metamorphic rocks. I then started an extra credit English assignment about how the cultural triad (gender, race, class) fits into my "thinking problem" I'm writing about in my essay.

4. Mom and Isabelle convinced me to see Insurgent with them. It wasn't as bad as I had feared it might be, but wasn't amazing. As I was joking about with Mom earlier, I love movie trailers, and I really, really love popcorn, and I think those might be the only reason I go to movies sometimes. That's not true for all movies of course, but certainly for some.

5. We came home and I worked a bunch more on the English assigment, ending up with 1000+ words of mostly gibberish about how we put ourselves into boxes because we aren't confidant in our role in society, and how this makes diverse societies and such difficult and why people tend to drift into groups of the "same" kind of people. It was weird, but it's extra credit, so heck, why not?

6. Worked on my Geology homework a bit, mostly filling in boxes about the likely formation of various rocks.

7. Was invited to a web based game of Nomic by an IRL friend. I'd never heard of Nomic before, but it sounds pretty awesome, and I'm excited to see how this goes. If you don't know what I'm talking about... google it.

8. Ate dinner, and had a long discussion with Mom about the political structures at SVC, and her concerns about the future there.

9. Watched Doctor Who, put finishing touches on Geo homework, got frustrated with Canvas as it wouldn't let me submit my English extra credit paper, wrote this log, read Jane Eyre, went to bed.

Friday, April 24, 2015 {MINIGOLF}

1.Got up and ready, made food to take with me to school.

2. Left at 7:10, caught the bus, and made it to WCC around 7:40. I was then going to eat some of the food I brought, but then I realized that it was still sitting on the counter.

3. Geology. Topic of the day - metamorphic rocks.

4. C and I hung out for another hour and a half. L joined us for a while and they tried to make me feel better about having no food by giving me their food, which I refused. By this point, I was really hungry and slightly light headed, having not eaten anything at all yet, and at 10:30ish I realized I had $6 (most of it in quarters), which was enough to buy a chicken teriyaki bowl at the school cafeteria. It served as my breakfast/lunch. During this time, C and I spent most of the hour playing on this minigolf app that he has gotten me addicted to, and talking about random stuff.

5. English. We spent the whole time discussing the Cynthia Selfe essay, and it evolved at some point into a discussion of Gamergate (google it if you don't know what I'm talking about). Very interesting overall.

6. Barely caught the bus downtown in time. Also had some adventures with my phone being dead, and needing to call my mom. C's phone was barely not dead, so I was able to use that. It was very exciting.

7. Walked 8ish blocks from the bus station to my appointment downtown.

8. After my appointment, I walked to the Co-op (the downtown branch), and had just enough money to buy hot chocolate. I paid for it entirely in quarters. I managed to get done almost all of my English homework while I was there.

9. Mom picked me up and we went home and had dinner.

10. Then we had self defense class. We talked about bullying, and worked on things to do when you are trapped on the ground while being attacked.

11. Got home, messed around on the internet for a little while, wrote this log, read Jane Eyre, went to bed.

Wednesday, April 22, 2015 {Earth Day}

*Quick note: I am going to be using initials to refer to various people in here if I'm not sure whether or not they want their names on my blog. If you don't know all of us, this might be a tad confusing, but it should at least help me in writing these, and will hopefully make the sentences clearer to read. If I'm referring to you as a letter in here, and you don't mind your name being out, let me know. My plan is to use initials to refer to kids, and use names for adults for the most part. Anyway, feedback appreciated on that one.

1. Woke up, got ready, and ate a hurried breakfast on the way to the bus. Caught the bus to school.

2. Went to Geology. The topic of the day was sedimentary rocks. I must say that I like the igneous rocks better so far. Much more neat and orderly in their identification.

3. Hung out with C (who is a friend of mine who is also in my Geology class) for an hour and a half. Watched him play mini-golf on his phone, played some mini-golf myself (I probably shouldn't have downloaded that app, but I did), and helped him with his Interpersonal Communications homework. And by help, I mean that he read the questions he had to answer out loud, and I looked slightly confused, and mumbled some things, and was generally useless.

4. Went to English. We were discussing an essay called "Lest We Think The Revolution is a Revolution" by Cynthia Selfe about the tech revolution (it was written in 1999) as it relates to teaching and schools.

5. Met my dad and Isabelle for lunch at the Co-op.

6. Park day! It was a nice day, and I mostly hung out with E, H, and C. We talked about being a feminist (I usually call myself one, but C was arguing that I shouldn't because of the negative . connotations that word has nowadays. He was saying that I should call myself an "equal rights activist" instead), and various other randomish things.

7. Came home, ate dinner, and wrote a 700 page informal paper, still on the topic of religion in the homeschool group. This is turning out to be a really interesting topic, but I'm a little worried about how well it's going to translate into a longer essay. I like most of what I've written so far, but what is looking like it's going to be my thesis is depressingly broad. Must fix that somehow...

8. Watched Doctor Who, wrote this, read Jane Eyre, went to bed.

Monday, April 20, 2015 {77 Degrees in April}

1. Got up at 6ish, showered, got dressed and ready. Somehow managed to still not have time to eat breakfast before leaving at 7. Took the bus to school, and ate a bagel while walking to class.

2. Went to Geology. The topic of the day was igneous rocks.

3. Hung out with a friend for an hour and a half. Was rather unproductive, and mostly watched him play a minigolf game on his phone and had conversations about totally random seeming stuff.

4. Went to English. We were talking about the 'Triad' - race, class, and gender/sexuality, and how we fit into it. Where we fit into that triad, and more importantly, where we are unsure how we fit, significantly shape our way of looking at the world.

5. Ate lunch out on the lawn in between the main campus buildings with my best friend and some friends of hers. I often hang out with her friends, and while I don't know many of them very well, I do know who many of them are, and have gained the ability to drop in and out of their social groups at will. Also, it was an incredible 77 degrees when I left campus at 2pm. 77! In April!

6. Took the bus downtown to the library and volunteered there. I learned today that I have a total of 163 voluteer hours logged there over the past 4 years!

7. Went to Chocolate Necessities and got gelato. I got salted caramel, strawberry, and pink grapefruit. I hung out with the younger of the two boys in the the family I was with for an hour while the older one was in dance class, and then the younger one and I headed to our class.

8. After dance, we went to Quizno's for dinner, and then came home and watched Doctor Who.

9. Attempted to make sense of my Geology homework, wrote this, read Jane Eyre, and went to bed.

Sunday, April 19, 2015 {The First Day!}

Woo! First post on a new blog! I've had a number of blogs in my time (some much more successful that others) and that first post is always exciting. I think this will go in different formats different days, but I'm going to start out by trying out a sort of a list format. Whatever I end up doing, my goal is to post about four times a week.

1. Woke up at 7:30, which was the latest I've woken up in maybe two weeks. It was great.

2. I spent a good part of the morning reading about plate tectonics for Geology and doing a "bonus" assignment for that class. One of my friends, who is in that class with me, and I are trying to figure out what these bonus assignments really are. The syllabus clearly states that there is NO extra credit available, but when the instructor handed out this assignment, he said that it wasn't required. Whaaa?

3. I wrote an 800 word informal paper for my English class about religion in my homeschool group, and an essay by Jamaica Kincaid called "On Seeing England for the First Time." The Kincaid essay is short, well-written, and is a very interesting look into the effects of colonialism and cultural difference.

4. Ate lunch, went to babysit. The weather was AMAZING for April - mid to high 60's and sunny, and so the kids and I spent the three hours I was with them outside, scootering around the cul-de-sac, playing in the yard, and trading Pokemon cards with the neighbor kid. Pokemon was huge in the homeschool group about five, six years ago, but it's totally faded out of my realm of awareness. Now these kids spend just as much time trading cards as my friends did back when we were the ages these kids are now.

5. Came home, ate mushroom bread pudding for dinner, and had a long discussion with Mom and Isabelle about the various attributes of the Tenth and Eleventh  Doctors from Doctor Who.

6. Read from my English textbook (the topic was different ways of using evidence in a paper), and completed a short discussion post on Canvas about it. Canvas, for those who don't know, is an online resource for colleges that allows instructors to put up lecture notes, assignments, handouts and more on it. It also has discussion forums for the class, ways to submit assignments electronically, and way to keep track of grades. Most classes at WCC use it, and for those that do, checking Canvas is as important as actually being in class. You have to do them both a lot to be successful.

7. Watched Doctor Who, and freaked out a little about the essay section of the SAT while Mom and Isabelle tried to convince me that I should actually be glad I have to write the essay, rather than being in next year's group, which won't have to.

8. Finished up homework due tomorrow, organized stuff I'll need tomorrow, read Jane Eyre, wrote this, and went to bed.

Another Set of Changes

You may remember that about nine months ago, I posted about some changes that were coming to this blog. The big one was that I was going to be focusing less of reading and writing, and more on my personal life, thought the Weekend Review posts, which served as weekly life updates. As time has gone on, those updates have been less and less frequent, and so has my posting in general.

I want to revitalize this blog a bit, and part of that is going to involve rethinking it's purpose. I want this blog to first and foremost be a place for me to share my thoughts and ideas about what I've been thinking, reading, writing, and doing. While the life update posts do fit into that in a way, they distract from the main idea a little.

I am going to have those life update posts drift away from this blog a bit in the near future. Yes, that means I do have a secondary blog that those are going to go onto. For those of you who know Spencer and his blog, my goal is to go a bit in that direction, posting daily, or at least three or four times a week. Some days might be a simple outline of what I was doing, others might be a discussion relating to something I heard about in class, or read online. My goal is for the posts to be short but current and interesting.

This blog will remain mostly as it is. Book reviews (hopefully more of them) will remain on here, as will my thoughts on writing, homeschooling, college, and other similar topics. Likely, if you follow both blogs, you'll see some topics coming up over there in a rough form, and them over here a week or two later, having been polished and written and edited to satisfaction.

This blog will probably start to look a little different soon, so get ready for that. I hope to still post here once a week or (maybe) more, and over on the other blog three to six times a week.

My new blog is really intended for those who really want to keep up with my life, and I imagine will mostly keep the attention of my offline friends and family. I won't promote it much, either here or on social media, unless there is something going on over there that I think is really interesting.

Click here to see my new blog: The Daily Ramble. I am planning on starting to post over there very soon, this week or next, so grab the RSS feed now to stay connected! It is pretty boring and barren over there at the moment, but that will change soon.

The Semicolon Project 2015

Yesterday was April 16th. If you spend time on the parts of social media that I do, you may have heard of the Semicolon Project, which happens on 4/16 each year.

This is the image that circulated a few years ago about this.

I love things like these because they create a sense of community and allow us to do one simple thing to show that we are part of a larger movement.

For me in particular, the date April 16th holds a lot of significance. It was a date where my life changed quite a bit at one point in the past, and to this day, it remains a day of thought and introspection for me.

I don't talk about this much on this blog, and I'm not going to start now, but anxiety and depression are things that I struggle with on a daily basis. I have people close to me who suffer from these issues as well, and they have effected my life in any number of ways. I don't know who I would be if I did not suffer from them.
The semicolon on my wrist.

I think things like the Semicolon Project are important because, as small as they are, they remind us that we need to celebrate the small victories. Celebrate the sentence that has not yet ended.

The semicolon on my wrist will fade in a day or two, but while it's there, it reminds me that depression and anxiety are a neverending battle between two parts of myself, and that the day I give up is the day the sentence ends. That sentence isn't ending anytime soon.

I'm a grammar nerd, and so I love semicolons no matter what, but the one on my wrist reminds me that I'm alive and I'm still fighting.
